THE QUEST FOR TRUTH
Islam, according to Muslim belief, is the natural religion of Thumankind. It is the religion of the truth of which human nature bears testimony. Its fundamental principles are recognised by religions and nations the oneness of God and His all- comprehensive providence, the universality of Divine revelation and human accountability for all actions in the life after death. This universal acceptance is clear evidence that it is the very nature of human beings that bears testimony to the truth. Islam removes all limitations upon these fundamental doctrines of the religion of humanity and gives it as wide a significance and scope as humanity itself.
No other religion in the world claims to be the natural religion of human beings. Every child that is born conforms to the true religion (fitrah - literally, human nature), then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian or a Magian - according to a saying of Prophet Muhammad, peace be on him. The ability to perceive the existence of God is inborn in human nature. This ability may subsequently be blurred by adverse environmental influences, but the human being can, however, understand and comprehend the existence of God by using his reasoning. "In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day are signs for people of understanding" (3:190). "God is the Originator of the heavens and the earth" (12:101). "He brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living. Such is God! How then are you perverted?" (6:95).

EMULATION NOT ADORATION

Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him. They deliver many speeches, they recall the lessons from the life of the beloved Prophet, peace be on him, and some go even further to do many other things in the way of celebration.
If the aim is to remind ourselves of the values which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, upheld, if the aim is to emulate his character and his conduct, if the purpose is to inculcate in the minds and hearts of our children, the love, the respect, the allegiance, and the gratitude we owe to the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, it is fine. This is provided the method, the manner and the way in which expressions are given through our celebrations are confined within the boundaries of the Shari'ah. However, I am saying this neither to approve nor disapprove of the celebrations as such. I wish only to invite you to concentrate with me on two main aspects: firstly, to study the life of the Prophet, and especially his personality and, secondly, to concentrate upon his message.
As far as his life and his personality are concerned, we should reflect upon it, and our reflection will re-confirm and reinforce a fact confirmed by the history of other Prophets. That fact is that when God, glorified and exalted is He, decides to choose

haykh Gamal worked from 1971 to 1991, as Imam in the London Central Mosque, from 1991 to 1998 in the Mus- lim College, London; from 1998 to 2007 in the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ottawa, Canada; and from 2007 to 2012 in the Mus- lim College, London. As a religious leader, Dr. Gamal was and is a member of many organisations and works as an expert dealing with Muslim family issues, interfaith matters and di- alogue, in prisons, hospitals, schools and the media.
