Page 02:About the Book مجموعة مؤلفات جمال الدین زربوزو Al-Basheer was a magazine dedicated to Islamic sciences. It was published from 1987 to 1995. During that time, it developed a small but very loyal following. Since it stopped being produced, there have been numerous requests for reprints of the old issues. Another and better suggestion was decided upon: reprinting of the original articles in book form. This is the first volume of such a proposed series. This particular volume contains a number of articles from the editor of al-Basheer, Jamaal al-Din M. Zarabozo. The articles contained in this volume come from the first two years of al-Basheer. Among the numerous articles contained herein are: "Allah's Description of the Hypocrites," "Between Islam and Kufr," "Islam and Innovations (1): The Meaning of Bidah," "There is no Compulsion in the Religion," "Daily Congregational Prayers and Combining the Prayers," "Zakaat and Jewelry," "Abu Hurairah: A Preserver of the Sunnah," "The Importance of Jihad in the Life of a Muslim," and "The Importance of the Sunnah and Hadith in Islam." These articles have been in great demand and it is hoped that their publication in book form will ease access to them on a large scale. These letters in and of themselves do not form a word. They are referred to as the muqatta'aat or "the disjointed letters". "The Disjointed Letters" These disjointed letters form the beginning of a number of soorahs in the Quran. Unfortunately, they have been the source of a great deal of controversy and confusion. The attempt here will be to first mention all of the different theories concerning such letters. This will be followed by a summary of the conclusions of the leading Quranic commentators. After that, a detailed discussion will follow of This article was prepared for al-Basheer, vol. 9, no. 1 (May-June 1995). Just before going to press, it was decided to discontinue the magazine. So it is actually an article that was never published. It was published as part of Jamaal al-Deen Zarabozo, The Methodology of the Quranic Commentators (Falls Church, VA: American Open University, 1997). However, since that publication is also not widely disseminated, it was decided to include the article here as part of the al- Basheer heritage. In this article, the references without footnotes to different Quranic commentators refer to the relevant commentary mentioned in the bibliography. 5
