CHAPTER ONE THE PRAYER 1. 'Umar bin al-Khattab (radiy Allahu 'anhu) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allâh () saying, إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لِكُلِّ امرىء ما نوى Indeed actions are by intentions and every person shall have what he intended. The hadith is agreed upon.1 2. Abu Hurayrah (radiy Allahu 'anhu) reported that the Messen- ger of Allâh said, الصلوات الخمس والجُمُعَةُ إلى الجُمُعَةِ كفارات لما بينهن ما لم تُغْشَ الكبائر». The five daily prayers and one Jumu'ah to the next Jumu'ah serve as an expiation [for the sins] commit- ted between them so long as the major sins are not perpetrated.
