The Arabic language is a generative one-it allows for the produc tion of new words by manipulating their form. The basmalah has no linguistic meaning but for the fact that it is a reference to the state- ment: Bismillah al-Rahmani al-Rahim. Other examples include the
hawqalah and the hay 'alah".
It is the motto of the faithful as they embark on any venture, be it banal or grand. It is an invocation of Allah's name and its blessings, a supplication that Allah aids us and places goodness in our endeav ours. One possible understanding of the bå in bism, is that it is one of isti anah-seeking help. In other words, it is as if one is saying, " seek help from Allah over this matter and I begin in His name." Thus, before we eat, enter the mosque, or recite the Qur'an, and as we commence any noble deed, we say the basmalah to bless our efforts and bring about Allah's grace.
QUR'ANICITY
The basmalah comes up as part of Surat al-Naml in the narrative of Sulayman. Quoting how Sulayman's message to Sheba was received, Allah says: "It is from Sulayman, and it is in the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Mercifier!"
As for Surat al-Fatihah specifically, and the beginning of every surah generally, there are various scholarly positions in terms of the status of the basmalah. These are:
The basmalah is a means of blessings and earning reward but is not an ayah of the Qur'an.
The basmalah is the first ayah of every sûrah, including al-Fatihah
The basmalah is the first ayah of Sürat al-Fatihah, but is an indepen- dent ayah at the beginning of every other surah.
The basmalah is an independent ayah revealed at the beginning of every surah of the Qur'an.
