The Music Made Me Do It by Dr. Gohar Mushtaq

Is the issue of music a controversial one in Islam? With the prevalence of computers and various electronic devices today, music and singing seem to be everywhere, and contemporary Muslims may be confused about their status in Islamic teachings. The Music Made Me Do It: An In-Depth Study of Music through Islam and Science examines this topic in light of authentic Islamic sources, in order to clarify the prohibitions and allowances regarding music and singing. In addition, the author describes the harmful social, psychological and physical effects of music on individuals, citing well-documented contemporary research in the fields of medical and behavioural sciences. The interweaving of the two perspectives makes this book a valuable asset for anyone interested in exploring this pertinent Islamic issue.

Human beings are social creatures who are affected by the
environment surrounding them. Nurture plays as important a role as nature in shaping a person. Many people are not used to looking at things deeply; they take things at their face value without questioning. Their minds do not question whether the things around them are right or wrong; they simply take the 'seeing is believing' approach.
In the present age, with the unprecedented progress in scientific inventions, one of the obsessions that has spread everywhere with exponential speed is music. Today, music has become so prevalent that many Muslims listen to it without even questioning its position in Islam. Such are the Muslims who believe in whatever they see.
It is strange that such Muslims completely ignore what the hadiths (statements and actions) of Prophet Muhammad (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam-blessings and peace be upon him) say regarding music. Today Muslims ask the following questions of the Islamic scholars at just about every Islamic conference, debate, lecture or convention:
What are the limits of hijab (the veil ordained by Allah for believing women) in Islam? Do we have to cover our faces or
not?
