Abu Bakr bin Ahmad narrates from 'Umar bin 'Uthmân bin 'Abdurahmân, Nawfal bin Muhammad, Muhammad bin 'Abdillah bin Muhammad, Rabî'ah bin 'Uthmân, Yûnus bin Muhammad, Mâin bin Yahyâ bin 'Abdillâh, Muhammad bin Umar ar-Râfiqi, Mu'âth bin Muhammad al-Anşâri, Abdurahman bin Abdil-Azîz, Abdullah bin Majîd et al:
Rasûlullâh passed away and Abu Bakr became the Khalifah. Abû Bakr eliminated the false prophets, Musaylamah and Shuja' Wâlûd, while Tulayhah fled to Syria. He conquered Yamâhah and destroyed Banû Hanîfa and the Arabs submitted to him. The Khalifah then resolved to invade Syria and fight the Romans. Hence, he gathered the Sahabah and said, "O people, may Allâh have mercy upon you. Remember that Allâh has blessed you with Islâm, made you the Ummah of Muhammad, increased your Faith and Conviction and granted you complete victory. He has said:
... اليَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا
Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed my favour unto you and have chosen Islam for you as a religion...

Know that Rasûlullâh intended to wage Jihâd in Syria and desired that effort should be made in that direction but then Allâh recalled him to Himself.

Events only briefly mentioned in other books are graphically described here, such as the Battle of al Yarmuk, which changed the course of world history. The great personalities of early Islam are brought to life in a unique way. The strategies of Khâlid bin al-Walid, the piety of Abû 'Ubaydah al-Jarrah, the bravery of Dirâr al-Kindi and many more are vividly described. The text also sheds light on some lesser known aspects of Islamic history such as the significant role of women and Roman princes who had embraced Islam.
AL IMAM AL WAQIDî, the great historian, was born at the beginning of 130 AH in al-Madinah, where he began his studies. He migrated to Iraq in 180 AH during the reign of Mamûn ar-Rashid. There Yahyâ al-Barmakî welcomed him due to his great learning and he was included as one of Mamûn's elite. He was soon appointed as judge and held this post until his death in 207 AH.
