(3:7) Madinian and Makkan Surahs: It has been reported that Qatadah said: "The Surahs of the Qur'an revealed in Madinah are: al-Baqarah (the Cow), Al- 'Imran (the Family of 'Imran), an-Nisa' (Women), al-Ma'idah (the Table Spread), Bara'ah (or at-Tawbah-Repentance), ar-Ra'd (Thunder), an-Nahl (the Bee), al-Hajj (the Pilgrimage), an-Nur (the Light), al-Ahzab (the Clans), Muhammad, al-Fath (Victory), al-Hujurat (the Private Apartments), ar-Rahman (the Beneficent), al-Hadid (Iron), al Mujadilah (She who disputed), al-Mumtahanah (She who is to be examined), as-Saf (Battle- Array), al-Jumu'ah (the Friday Congregation), al-Munafiqun (the Hypocrites), at-Taghabun (Mutual Disillusion), at-Talaq (Divorce), the first ten verses of at-Tahrim (Prohibition), az- Zalzalah (the Earthquake) and an-Nasr (the Help). Apart from these, all the other Surahs were revealed in Makkah. ****** Al-Qurtubi maintained that there are foreign words in the Qur'an apart from the names of Prophets. This view, however, was refuted by al-Baqillani and at-Tabari, who both said that the foreign words in the Qur'an are only those which are common to other languages as well. 25
