Page:04 Allah says in the Qur'an: Is not the time ripe for the hearts of those who believe to submit to Allah's reminder and the truth which is revealed, that they become not as those who received the Scripture of old but the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened, and many of them are evil-doers? Know that Allah restores the earth to life after its death. We have made plain to you Our revelations that you may understand. (57:16-17). This verse contains a reminder that Allah softens hardened hearts with faith and true guidance just as He brings the dead land back to life with rain. We ask Allah, the Beneficent, to make our hearts tender. The Best Methods of Tafseer The most correct method of Tafseer is to explain the Qur'an by the Qur'an, for what is generalised in one place is detailed in another. If you do not find any clear explanation in the Qur'an then turn to the Sunnah, which explains the Qur'an. As ash- Shafi'i said: "All the judgments of the Prophet come from his understanding of the Qur'an: And We have revealed to you the Scripture with the truth, that you may judge between mankind by that which Allah shows you. And be not a pleader for the treacherous. (4:105). That was why the Prophet said: "Surely, I was given the Qur'an and with it I was given something similar to it." (That is the Sunnah). If you do not find an explanation in the Sunnah, then turn to the opinions of the Sahabah, for they knew the Qur'an better than anyone else due to their knowledge of the circumstances of its revelation, their complete understanding and correct knowledge of it and their righteous conduct. 21
