or white, human or Jinn. As Allah says: ...but for those of the factions who deny it, the Fire will be their promised place. (11:17). Allah encourages His servants to understand the Qur'an: Will they not ponder on the Qur'an? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein many contradictions. (4:82) (This is) a Scripture that we have revealed unto you, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that men of understanding may reflect. (38:29) Will they then not meditate on the Qur'an, or are there locks upon their hearts? (47:24)
It is therefore the duty of the 'ulama (scholars) to reveal the meanings of Allah's Words and explicate them; to seek its exegesis from the sources, and then to engage in teaching it to others. As Allah says in the Qur'an: And (remember when) Allah took a covenant from those who had been given the Scripture, to make it clear to mankind, and not to hide it. But they flung it behind their backs and exchanged it for a miserable price. Assuredly, evil was what they purchased. (3:187) Those who conceal any part of the Scripture which Allah has sent down and barter it for a paltry price, they simply fill their bellies with fire, Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them (or make them grow). Theirs will be a painful torment. (2:174). Allah has criticised the people of the Book who came before us for turning away from the Divine Scriptures revealed to them and for rejecting His command to follow His Book. We, the Muslims, should avoid that which brought them Allah's displeasure and should obey His command to study the Book and teach it, to comprehend and explain it to others. Allah says in the Qur'an: Is not the time ripe for the hearts
