Page:04 Biography of Ibn Kathir He was Hafiz Abul Fida Ismail ibn Abi Hafs Shihabuddin Omar ibn Kathir ibn Daw ibn Kathir ibn Zar' the Qurasihite - originally from Busra (Syria) - and raised in Damascus. He followed the Shafi'ee school of thought. Ibn Kathir was born in the year 701 (A.H) in an area called Majdal, near Busra, west of Damascus. His father died when he was only four years old and was taken in by his brother and moved to Damascus in 706. Here, he learned from great scholars such as Ibn Asakir, Ishaq ibn Yahya Al-Amudi and the great Ibn Taymiyah who was extremely close to him. He also studied under various other sheikhs who gave him permission in fiqh and Hadith. He made many academic contributions to Islamic sciences. following are amongst his most prominent: 1. Tafseer of the Qur'an; The 2. Al-Bidayah Wannihaya: a history of Muslims from Adam until his (Ibn Kathir's) time; 3. At-Takmeel: a book on the science of Asmaul Rijal (profiles of transmitters of Hadith); 4. Jamiul Masaneed: a book that collects the Hadith from ten major books on Hadith; 8
Page:05 words, and follow him that you may be rightly-guided." (7:158) And Allah says: That I may warn with it you and whomsoever it may reach. (6:19). The Qur'an is therefore a warning to all those who have received it, be they Arab or non- Arab, black or white, human or Jinn. As Allah says: ...but for those of the factions who deny it, the Fire will be their promised place. (11:17). Allah encourages His servants to understand the Qur'an: Will they not ponder on the Qur'an? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein many contradictions. (4:82) (This is) a Scripture that we have revealed unto you, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that men of understanding may reflect. (38:29) Will they then not meditate on the Qur'an, or are there locks upon their hearts? (47:24) It is therefore the duty of the 'ulama (scholars) to reveal the meanings of Allah's Words and explicate them; to seek its exegesis from the sources, and then to engage in teaching it to others. As Allah says in the Qur'an: And (remember when) Allah took a covenant from those who had been given the Scripture, to make it clear to mankind, and not to hide it. But they flung it behind their backs and exchanged it for a miserable price. Assuredly, evil was what they purchased. (3:187) Those who conceal any part of the Scripture which Allah has sent down and barter it for a paltry price, they simply fill their bellies with fire, Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them (or make them grow). Theirs will be a painful torment. (2:174). Allah has criticised the people of the Book who came before us for turning away from the Divine Scriptures revealed to them and for rejecting His command to follow His Book. We, the Muslims, should avoid that which brought them Allah's displeasure and should obey His command to study the 17
