It is called Al-Fatiha (The Opening) because the Qur'an opens with it as does the prayer, Fatiha al- Kitab (The Opening of the Book) because it is the first chapter in the Qur'an, Umm al-Kitab (The Mother of the Book) according to the unanimous opinion of the scholars, based on an authentic hadith narrated by At-Tirmidhi, As-Sabu Al- Mathani (The Seven Oft-repeated[Verses]) according to the same aforementioned hadith. It is also called Al-Hamdu, because of the first word in the second verse: Al-Hamdu Lillahi... - All praise be to Allah... It is also known as As-Salah (The Prayer), because it is an integral part of the prayer; the Prophet() "Salla Allahu 'alaihee wa sallam" 'Blessings and Peace be upon him,' said:
"Allah () "Subhāhnahu wa ta'ala "'The Exalted,' says, 'The prayer has been divided into two halves between Me and My slave, so that if the slave says: 'Al-Hamdu Lillahi Rabbil 'Alameen.' [All praise be to Allah (3), the Rabb (Lord) of the worlds], Allah () says, 'My slave has praised Me.""" (Narrated by Muslim)
It is also known as Ash-Shifa' (The Cure), according to a narration by Ad-Darimi in which he quotes Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri

Whenever a Muslim performs his daily prayers, he has to begin every Raka' by reciting Soorah al-Fatiḥa. But some of us may be ignorant of the essence of this soorah with which the Holy Qur'an opens, though it was not revealed first.
In this book Sameh Strauch explains that essence, producing stories of Fatiḥa's cure effect, the other names given to it and disagreement among Muslim scholars on whether "Bismillah" is a part of that soorah.
