Introduction
Let us briefly reflect on the purpose of the stories recounted in the Qur'an. Allah (Subḥânahu wa Ta'âlâ – Glorified and Exalted is He) has detailed these stories about the nations and individuals of the past, so that we can ponder over their narratives and learn from their experiences. These stories should be read with an open mind and with a view to implement the lessons learnt in our lives.
Allah informs us that He sent prophets-only some of whom have been mentioned in the Qur'an-to all previous nations to guide them and reform their lives. Although these prophets lived in different times and places, and often under contrasting circumstances, they were all inspired by Allah through direct revelation - usually brought down and communicated by Angel Jibreel (alayhi as-salám-peace be upon him) to convey His message to their respective nations. The final messenger Muhammad (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam- blessings and peace be upon him) was chosen as a guide for all humanity.
The prophets differed somewhat in their teachings according to the specific needs of their place and era. However, they all conveyed the same message of monotheism and sought to establish a system based on equity and righteousness. Indeed, association of partners with Allah is the gravest sin in His sight, and all prophets and their followers strove against this practice in its various forms and manifestations. The prophets warned their people against moral disintegration and sought to eliminate such exploitative practices as dishonesty in trade, oppression of the poor, tyranny against other nations, and racial
discrimination.
Introduction 15
While some prophets were granted great influence and authority by Allah (), many others faced radical opposition, mainly from the influential ones in society - kings, ministers, clerics, tribal leaders, and wealthy traders - who viewed the messengers as a threat to their own power and hegemony. Other factors such as social and economic considerations, pride in customary practices, and aversion to the concept of life after death, created further hurdles for many of the prophets. They were, at times, violently opposed, and their followers, especially the powerless ones, were subjected to great atrocities. Such oppressive societies often encountered Allah's punishment in the form of a devastating flood or earthquake or storm or some other calamity - that flattened entire cities and wiped out thriving civilizations, within a matter of days.
Although the prophets had tasks of differing magnitudes, and Allah honoured some of them over others, we are required to respect them indiscriminately and hold them all in great esteem. The prophets were not the only ones to be favoured by Allah, however, according to the Qur'an. The miraculous birth of Prophet 'Eesâ to Maryam was a great tribute by Allah to Maryam's truthfulness and chastity. Similarly, the wisdom of Luqmân; the steadfastness of the young men who hid in the cave; the motherly instincts of Prophet Moosâ's mother; and the effective leadership of Tâloot, all have an honourable mention in the Qur'an and provide a great source of inspiration to the readers.
