Chapter 1
Before the Dust Settles
Dust hung thick in the air, like the earth couldn't settle after the storm. The trenches stood empty now, deep cuts in the ground like scars on Madinah's skin. Broken weapons lay scattered, half-buried in the sand.
The Quraysh had come with their allies, a vast army intent on destroying the Muslims. They had laid siege and circled like vultures. But the city had survived. It could breathe again.
Alhamdulillah.
In the low afternoon light, the Prophet #roamed the tired streets, his armour clinking softly with each step. Dust swirled around his greaves as he passed homes where exhausted men lay sprawled. Women hurried to tend to the wounded while children darted between the buildings
"Baba's home! Baba's home?" they called, their voices bright with laughter.
But the Prophet's mind wandered. Freshly revealed Qur'an echoed in his mind:
"Allah has turned back the disbelievers with all their nagy, having achieved no good; and Allah sufficed the bearers from fighting And Allah is Picceful, Mighty"
The Quraysh had fled, and victory was theirs. But they had come, nonetheless. His own people. His own kin. They had marched here to kill him.
The Prophet stopped at a corner, one hand resting against a wall. His eyes turned north. Makkah. How long had it been since he'd walked those streets? Since he'd circled the Ka'bah beneath its shade? His chest tightened at the thought.
Defeat would surely humble the Quraysh. This loss would surely crack their pride. Wouldn't it?
