YUSUF: JOSEPH
PERIOD OF REVELATION
This surah was revealed during the last stage of the Prophet's stay in Makkah. It was a time when the Quraysh were considering the question of killing, exiling, or imprisoning him. The Jews instigated the unbelievers to test the Prophet Muhammad
by asking him: Why did the Israelites go to Egypt?." The history of the Israelites was not known to the Arabs, and the Prophet had no means of knowing their traditions. Therefore, they thought that the Prophet would not be able to give a satisfactory answer, and thus, would be totally exposed. But, contrary to theirexpectations, the tables were turned on them, when Allah revealed the whole story of Prophet Yusuf. The surah consists of 111 verses and it derives its title from Prophet Yusuf's story.
VIRTUES
قالَ خَالِدُ بنُ مَعْدَانَ: "سورةُ يُوسُفَ وَسُورَةُ مَرْيَمَ يَتَفَكَّهُ بِهِمَا أَهْلُ الجَنَّةِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ" وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَطَاءٍ: "لَا يَسْمَعُ سُورَةَ يُوسُفَ مَحْرُونٌ إِلَّا اسْتَرَاحَ إِلَيْه". (تفسير ابن كثير ٢/٦١٢)
Khalid Ibn Ma'dan said: 'Dwellers of Paradise amuse themselves there with Surahs Yusuf and Maryam,' and Ibn 'Ata' said: 'When a sad person hears Surah Yusuf, he feels at ease! [Tafsir Ibn Kathir 2/612]
