due to his insignificance and lowliness to Allaah. This He does in order to further distance him from Himself, and to multiply the pain- ful, eternal punishment of the Hereafter upon him, a punishment whose severity cannot truly be grasped by the imagination.
2. Seeking the Pleasure of Allaah
The Muslim ponders over the relationship between the enjoyment of this worldly life, the pleasure of the Lord of the Universe, and bliss in the Hereafter. He considers the relationship between suffer- ing in this world, the wrath of the Lord of the Universe, and the punishment of the Hereafter. He considers carefully the saying of Allaah, the Most High:
وَقَالُوا لَوَلَا نُزِلَ هَذَا القُرانُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْقَرْيَتَانِ عَظِيمٍ أَهُم يَقْسِمُونَ رَحْمَتَ رَبِّكَ نَحْنُ قَسَمْنَا بَيْنَهُم مَعِيشَتَهُمْ فِي الْحَيَوةِ الدُّنيا وَرَفَعْنَا بَعْضُهُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجَاتٍ لِيَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُهُم بَعْضًا سُخْرِيَّا وَرَحْمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ وَلَوْلَا أَن يَكُونَ النَّاسُ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً لَجَعَلْنَا لِمَن يَكْفُرُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ
لبُيُوتِهِمْ سُقفَا مَن فِضَّةٍ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَيْهَا يَظْهَرُونَ ) وَلِبُيُوتِهِمْ أَبْوَابًا وَسُرُرًا عَلَيْهَا يَتَّكِمُونَ وَزُخْرُفَا وَإِن كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَاعُ الْحَيَوَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةُ عِندَ رَبِّكَ
