Change or Loss | An Islamic Vision for Personal Change by Dr. Abdul Karim Bakkar

Change or Loss: An Islamic Vision for the Principles & Methods for Personal Change by Dr. Abdul Karim Bakkar is an inspiring self-development book that presents an Islamic perspective on meaningful personal transformation. The author explains that genuine change requires vision, determination, self-awareness, and a willingness to grow while recognizing that not every desire leads to true success. Through practical insights and Islamic principles, Dr. Bakkar guides readers in overcoming obstacles, correcting habits, setting realistic goals, and developing a balanced personality rooted in faith. Drawing upon timeless values and practical life experience, the book encourages readers to embrace positive change, strengthen their relationship with Allah, and pursue continuous self-improvement. It is an excellent resource for anyone seeking spiritual growth, personal development, and a purposeful life.

From Author:

Change is not an easy and insignificant issue. It needs a deep insight and vision as much as will and determination. It is important here to realize that we can't achieve all what we want and desire. Furthermore, getting what need and desire may not always be in our interest. This, of course, requires two things.

Content:

Understanding the True Meaning of Change

Change is one of life's greatest challenges, yet it is essential for personal growth and progress. The author explains that lasting transformation requires self-awareness, determination, realistic goals, and reliance on Allah. Rather than pursuing unrealistic ambitions, readers are encouraged to recognize their strengths, understand their limitations, and strive for continuous improvement within the boundaries of Islamic teachings.

Practical Principles for Lasting Personal Growth

This book presents a step-by-step approach to positive change by exploring key topics such as:

The true meaning and importance of change.
Why mental and behavioral change can be challenging.
The role of knowledge in personal development.
Building determination and perseverance.
Overcoming procrastination and fear of change.
Recognizing and addressing negative habits.
Turning setbacks into opportunities for growth.
Appreciating the long-term rewards of positive transformation.

Each chapter provides practical insights that readers can apply to improve their daily lives and achieve meaningful personal development.

Knowledge as the Foundation of Success

Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim Bakkar emphasizes that knowledge is one of the greatest drivers of change. By seeking beneficial knowledge, expanding one's understanding, and continuously learning, individuals become better equipped to make wise decisions, strengthen their character, and contribute positively to society.

An Islamic Approach to Self-Improvement

Grounded in Islamic values, the book reminds readers to seek Allah's guidance, place their trust in Him, and remain patient throughout the journey of change. It highlights the importance of sincere intentions, moderation, and perseverance while encouraging believers to pursue growth that leads to both worldly success and the pleasure of Allah.

Change is not an easy and insignificant issue. It needs a deep insight and vision as much as will and determination. It is important here to realize that we can't achieve all what we want and desire. Furthermore, getting what need and desire may not always be in our interest. This, of course, requires two things from us:
First: realize the limits of our potentials [and capabilities] in a good way. For instance, the person who is fifty years old can't play on an international football team. Similarly, a person who is in his sixties can't memorize poetry in the same capacity as the twenty years old person. Second: we should always aim to make what we desire to achieve within the domain of legal and moderate scope. In case of confusion or if we feel short-sighted, we should seek refuge with Allah, the Almighty, seek His [guidance] and assistance, then we should be satisfied and happy with what He grants us in terms of good and success.
I will attempt through this treatise to break this hard equation by presenting top, deep and practical ideas in an easy method that would be understood by the youth without much difficulties.

Introduction
All praise is due to Allah, the Almighty. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Prophet and Messenger Mohammed, his Companions, his family members, and those who followed them until the Day of Judgment.
I feel very optimistic to hear, see, and notice a longing among people to renew their lives and change them. This is noticeable on both public and personal levels. The word "change" became one of the most frequently used and widely-spread terminologies. Furthermore, there are hundreds of training courses that encourage change and entice people to do so. There is notable development in the ideas and methods that help make change an integral part in the lives of the youth. The reason for my optimism is that change is a revolutionary idea.
It is possible to see an entire nation depressed and stagnated for several centuries, as has happened to the Islamic nation, for instance. Some readers of Ibn Khaldoun's great book "The Introduction [to History]", who reads it with close examination, may have noticed that he was mainly describing situations, rather than offering solutions or opening new horizons for change and reform.

Knowledge is a Supporting Factor for Change
There are indications that there is a link between being prepared for change and welcoming it, along with the educational level of people who would like to implement the change.
There are also indications that the higher the cultural level of a society, the higher the aspirations of its individuals to improve, progress, and succeed. These aspirations also increase the longing for change. It makes people more willing to pay the cost and expense of change. In other words, this means that the higher the illiteracy level among the people of a nation, the more people will be satisfied with current situations, no matter how bad they are, due to the state of despair and depression those individuals of society suffer. Ignorance also leads people to think that there are no better things to do in life. I always emphasize that super-personal knowledge enables an individual to add a lot of changes to his personality. It broadens the person's horizon, makes him more mature, and helps him better understand himself as well as the surrounding world. Learning in a distinguished and reputable institute, university, or school is the shortest road to possessing a great amount of knowledge.
The Joy of Change
It is beneficial to reassess our outlook towards change. Most people look at change as an added burden and commitment since it comes with giving up some things one enjoys doing.
Change may require a person to do undesirable actions and practices. This is, in reality, only half of the truth. The other half of the truth is found in the virtues and benefits that we should possess after the change
