2-Sahabah or the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad &ahabah is the term used for the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad. They were the closest to the Prophet. They memorized the Quran, collected his teachings and transmitted the hadith. In general, this term is also used for anyone who believed in the Prophet's mission and had seen him at least once in his lifetime. The number of such believers is estimated at more than one hundred thousands.
The Quran does not use this term but refers rather to the Prophet's Companions. It mentions their faith, sincerity, sacrifices, belief in the Prophet's mission and their joining him in his divine mission. After the death of the Prophet, they continued to spread the message of Islam all over the world.
The Companions of the Prophet were chosen to carry out Allah's wish that Islam should spread. They were to avoid the easy, quick way of doing things and to be patient instead. They did not place their personal desires and choices above Allah's will. The Companions gave up everything without caring about any reward in this world. It was as a result of their efforts that Islam grew. The Quran calls them 'the true believers', who shall receive mercy in the Hereafter. It also asks all other believers to pray for them.
The Prophet Muhammad called them role models for believers in all times. The early Companions who had to leave their homes and belongings were called Al-Muhajirun (the migrants). The other group, who helped the Prophet and the migrants, were referred to as Al-Ansar (the helpers). Allah made them brothers and united their hearts.
