They were the closest to the Prophet. They memorized the Quran, collected his teachings and transmitted the hadith. In general, this term is also used for anyone who believed in the Prophet's mission and had seen him at least once in his lifetime. The number of such believers is estimated at more than one hundred thousands.The Quran does not use this term but refers rather to the Prophet's Companions. It mentions their faith, sincerity, sacrifices, belief in the Prophet's mission and their joining him in his divine mission. After the death of the Prophet, they continued to spread the message of Islam all over the world.The Companions of the Prophet were chosen to carry out Allah's wish that Islam should spread. They were to avoid the easy, quick way of doing things and to be patient instead. They did not place their personal desires and choices above Allah's will. The Companions gave up everything without caring about any reward in this world. It was as a result of their efforts that Islam grew. The Quran calls them 'the true believers', who shall receive mercy in the Hereafter. It also asks all other believers to pray for them.The Prophet Muhammad called them role models for believers in all times. The early Companions who had to leave their homes and belongings were called Al-Muhajirun (the migrants). The other group, who helped the Prophet and the migrants, were referred to as Al-Ansar (the helpers). Abu Bakrbu Bakr was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. He was also the Lfirst caliph of Islam, chosen after the death of the Prophet in 632 C.E. Abu Bakr came from Makkah and belonged to a noble family of the Quraysh. His father, Uthman Abi Qahafah, was an influential Makkan, and his mother, Ummul Khair, belonged to the Banu Taim branch of the Quraysh.Abu Bakr was born in the year 573 C.E., about two years after the birth of the Prophet. He belonged to a wealthy family but he led a disciplined life. He was always truthful and never fell into the evil ways. He became a successful trader and his dealings were always fair and above board.Abu Bakr and the Prophet Muhammad knew each other since their childhood. Both could trace their lineage for seven generations. When the Prophet received the first revelation from Allah in 610 C.E. in the month of Ramadan and told this to Abu Bakr, he immediately accepted it, because he knew that Muhammad was Sadiq, meaning truthful.Abu Bakr never doubted the Prophet's words and wholeheartedly believed in the truth of the Prophet's message. He converted to Islam without any hesitation. He was the first person outside the family of the Prophet to accept Islam.2. However, Abu Bakr never felt afraid when opposed or harassed by the Quraysh. Throughout his entire life he remained the Prophet Muhammad's closest companion.
