When Was Soorat Yoosuf Revealed, and What Effect Did It Have On the Prophet ( and His Companions?
This noble chapter, Soorat Yoosuf, was revealed to Allah's Messenger
() after Soorat Hood during a tragic period in his life. He and the believers with him were facing hardships and losses, especially after the Prophet () lost his two supporters: his pure, compassionate wife, Khadeejah (radiya Allâhu 'anhâ - may Allah be pleased with her) and his supportive, protective uncle, Abu Tâlib. After their deaths, tribulations and persecutions intensified against Allah's Messenger () and the believers to the degree that this year became known as 'The Year of Grief'.
During these trying times in the life of the noble Prophet ( and in this period when he and the believers were suffering from loneliness, estrangement, and social exile at the hands of Quraysh's disbelievers, Allah () revealed this soorah to His Prophet(). aimed to console him and alleviate his pains by mentioning the stories of the Messengers.
It is as if Allah, the Most High, was saying to His Prophet ( Do not grieve, O Muhammad (), and do not permit your people belying and persecution of you to make you panic, for relief follows difficulty and with hardship comes ease. Look at your brother, Yoosu Ponder the multitude of tribulations and hardships he experience and the various trials he faced: the trial of his brothers envying and
When Was Soorat Yoosuf Revealed... plotting against him, then the trial of being thrown into the well, then the trial of being chased after and adored by al-'Azeez's wife, then the trial of her trying everything to tempt and seduce him, and then the trial of being imprisoned after an affluent and luxurious lifestyle! Consider this. After he patiently endured everything for the sake of his 'aqeedah and exercised patience in the face of adversity, I sent him from the prison to the palace. I made him an authority in Egypt and gave him control of its treasures. He became respected and obeyed. I do this to My awliya' (closest slaves) and those who are patient with My tests. So you must prepare yourself to endure the hardships and follow the example of the Messengers who preceded you.
فَأَصْبَرَ كَمَا صَبَرَ أُوْلُوا الْعَزْمِ مِنَ الرُّسُلِ ... ) (سورة الأحقاف: ٣٥)
So be patient, as the Messengers of strong resolve were patient...>> (al-Ahqaf 46: 35)
And be patient and steadfast, for your patience can only be by the help of Allah; do not grieve over them, and do not be distressed because of their plots. (an-Nahl 16: 127)
It is no surprise then that this soorah, which encapsulates the story of the noble Prophet Yoosuf () and the remarks that follow it, was revealed to Allah's Messenger () and the Muslim community in Makkah. It was a means of consoling and reassuring them and keeping them firm after they were banished and ostracized.
One feels that this (revelation) subtly foreshadows being driven out from Makkah to another land in which victory and establishment will take place despite their being threatened and forced to leave! In the same manner, Yoosuf () was deprived of his father's company

1 They differed over what age denotes reaching maturity. Mâlik, Raber Zayd ibn Aslam, and ash-Sha'bi said that it refers to puberty. Sa'eed in Jubayr held that it was at eighteen years old. Ad-Daḥhâk said it was twen years old. 'Ikrimah said it was twenty-five years old. As-Suddi said it a thirty years old. Ibn 'Abbâs, Mujâhid, and Qatâdah said it was thirty-thre years old. Al-Hasan said it was forty years old, and the words of the M High supported this view:

Taken from at-Tabari, Târeekh at-Tabari, 1:336. 2 A person's attention is drawn to the repetitive mention of the quality ihsân (excellence) in this soorah, for Yoosuf exhibited ihsan with Lord as well as with the people (and these two are inseparable). All had named his story the best [ahsan] of stories (12: 3), meaning o the best ever. Likewise, He made giving him judgement and knowle while young contingent upon his ihsân: When Yoosuf reached his pr We gave him wisdom and knowledge. Thus do We reward those wh good [muḥsineen]) (12: 22). Likewise, the prisoners described him this same quality: Tell us the interpretation of these dreams, for we that you are a man of virtue and knowledge [muhsineen (12:36 because of this virtue that Allah established him in the land: Thus established Yoosuf in the land, so that he was free to do therein wh he willed. And Here He Is, Being Sold to al-'Azeez of Egypt 159
because he was a doer of good and one who obeyed Allah, the Most High.'
Lessons from these verses
1- The points of reflection in the Qur'anic stories are in the events and their lessons, not in the names and places
The Qur'an did not identify the person who purchased him in Egypt from the travellers, his position, or his wife. That is because the Qur'an
-Also, his brothers said to him while not recognizing him: take one of us, instead of him, for indeed we see that you are a kind man [muḥsineen]>> (12: 78). Later, Yoosuf () said about himself and his brother: Allah has indeed been gracious to us. Verily, whoever fears Allah and is patient, Allah will not cause the reward of those who do good [muhsineen] to be lost (12: 90). Finally, he praised his Lord about His iḥsân towards him - and indeed, is the reward of iḥsân anything but iḥsân? - by saying: He has indeed been gracious [aḥsana] to me, when He rescued me from prison) (12: 100). The repayment is of the same nature as the deed. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah bestow mercy upon him, states regarding the verse:
...for the mercy of Allah is always near to those who do good [muḥsineen]. (al-A'râf 7: 56):
He specified the people of ihsân as being near to mercy because that is ihsân from Allah, the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, and His iḥsân is only for the people of iḥsân since the repayment has the same nature as the deed. Just as they exhibited iḥsân with their actions, He exhibited iḥsân to them with His mercy. When those who are not the people of ihsân became distant from iḥsân, the mercy became distant from them in proportion to their proximity and distance. Hence, whoever comes closer via ihsân, Allah comes closer to him with His mercy, and whoever becomes distant from ihsân, Allah becomes distant from him with His mercy.
Ibn al-Qayyim, at-Tafseer al-Qayyim, 258. aş-Şâbooni, Mukhtaşar Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 2:477.
