Is childbirth in th
for men: is childbirth mentioned in the Qur'an? Indeed, yes it As the Qur'an speaks about marriage and pregnancy, this leads us to another common question, especially for wor the story of Sayyidah Maryam, in Surah Maryam Chapter 19.A
So she conceived him, and withdrew with him to a remote place. The

A reassuring voice, l, which is actually Sayyidina Isa, calls to her from under the tree, telling her not to grieve and worry. The comforting voice tells Sayyida Maryam that her Lord has provided a stream under her feet and if she shakes the trunk of the palm, fresh ripe dates will fall. so that she can eat, drink, feel at ease and not worry.

increased. And then she cried from what she was
experiencing
Sayyida Maryam's pregnancy was different and unique, as there man (husband) in her life. Allah blew from His spirit and she b pregnant. What did she then do? Now pregnant, she withdrew t mote place. When she reached full term, the reality of the pains of I drove her to the trunk of a palm tree, which she held on to as the she had died before this, and been completely forgotten by people Experiencing a pregnancy, labour pains and delivery is something woman will go through, and its importance is reinforced in the way mentioned it in detail in the Qur'an. He could have simply s baby was delivered, but He went into the detail of what a woman ences through the process of labour. The word makhad specifically to contractions during labour, and not just the delivery.
Support during labour
gle for example if their husband passed away. They too would face preg- nancy alone, possibly with no family around them and this is a situation which is not uncommon all over the world.
Allah told Maryam to shake the palm tree and 'eat, drink from the water under you, and don't worry.' Why did He ask her to shake the palm tree? Allah could have easily sent the dates to her. The first lesson Allah is teaching us is to take action, to use the resources we have and work for what we want.
The second is that woman in labour need support. Apart from the need for food and drink, she needs to feel good and for someone to support her. In the case of Sayyidah Maryam, she was alone and experienced fear and anxiety, but Allah was with her and Sayyidina Isa was under her. When we are aware of a woman going through labour, we need to em-
pathise with her and offer her help and support. Through the permission and blessings of Allah, these days there are many ways to ease the la- bour experience, but in some parts of the world, these facilities are not available at all. Sayyidah Maryam is told jg, to 'cool her eyes' when she sees her newborn, which is the universal experience for every woman who is in delivery; the sight of the baby overtakes the labour pains a mother has just experienced.

How did it all
[n the previous chapter we learned that Allah & decided He was go to put a khalifa, a representative of Him on this Earth and that our pu pose is none other than to worship Him alone. This leads to our seco question: how did this Earth come into being? We know the Qur'an h
the answer, as we find in Surah al-Anbiya, Allah says:
أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنْ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ
الْمَاءِ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَيَّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
Don't the disbelievers see that the heavens and the Earth were one entity and then we separated them and made from water every living thing Why don't
they believe?
(al-Anbiya 21:30)
When Allah gives us a verse, it is not only one lesson we gain, the are many points we need to ponder upon. In this verse there are thre
important points.
Seeing with our heart
This verse begins with the first lesson:
How did it all start?
9
they were initially one piece and then by Allah's ability and decision, He made them separate; the heavens went up and the Earth went down. The exact details of this are not something Allah wanted us to know, or it would be clear in the Qur'an. What He wants us to know is proven by science now, that the heavens and Earth when joined, were made up of multiple gases which separated from each other when they became very heavy, akin to an explosion. Then they became like circles from which the Earth started and the heavens were lifted up and made into seven heavens.
Water: the source of life
The third lesson is from the last part of this verse about the human being's
nature:
And we made from water every living thing
Those who deny the presence of Allah, don't they see?
We can ask, what is there to see? In this ayah we are being told to se with our heart and look with our inner sight, to recognise that everything around us is a sign from Allah to know Him, remember Him and, d course, to worship Him. Those who really want to know Allah look: the universe which reveals many aspects of itself and then they reflect a Allah. The first thing we need to do is to look with our heart, to thir about how it all started and learn from this in order to get closer to Alla 4. The next question that comes to mind then, is, how did it all start?
The separation of the heavens and the Earth
The second lesson from this verse answers this question with a scientifi miracle. We are told that the heavens and the Earth are signs of Allah
Don't they believe?'
Everything in creation, the human being and the Earth consists of 70% water, and it's the same for every living thing; almost all the animals have the same composition.
And Allah says in another verse in Surah al-Nur.
Allah has created every [living] creature from water. And of them are those that move on their bellies, and of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
