Commentary on The Forty Hadiths of An Nawawi
May Allah gladden a man who hears something from us, so he conveys
it as he heard it. Perhaps the one it is transmitted to is more
understanding than the one who heard it. (Tirmidhi)
Therefore, it is due to these Hadiths that are authentically narrated from the Prophet that Imam Nawawi compiled this collection of Forty Hadiths.
The Authenticity of Hadiths of Al Arbaeen
Imam Nawawi has collected most of the Hadiths in this collection from Sahihain (Bukhari and Muslim). However, there are some Hadiths where the chain has been criticized by some of the scholars. Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali has discussed those Hadiths in his book 'Jami Uloom Wal Hikam'. You can refer to that book for more information.
The list of Hadiths for which the chains have been criticised are as follows:
1. Hadith No 12
2. Hadith No 29
3. Hadith No 30
4. Hadith No 31
5. Hadith No 39
6. Hadith No 41
[See individual sections for the content of each Hadith] One should note, however, that although the chains of these Hadiths are weak, when a scholar of a high calibre like Imam Nawawi, or another who is of similar high quality, brings a Hadith with a weak chain, it is not the same as when a layperson quotes a Hadith with a weak chain. Why? Because Imam Nawawi knows that the chain of it is weak, but because it has other related chains

Commentary on The Forty Hadiths of An Nawawi
Therefore the only people whose actions will be accepted are those who do an action with both Ikhlaas (Sincerity) and Mutab'ah (Following the way of the Prophet
This is why a Muslim should strive to do every action with sincerity, and following in the footsteps of the Prophet.
Allah says:
So that He may test you as to which of you is better in his deeds. (Quran67:2)
And the Prophet taught Mua'dh as the following dua:
اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
O Allah, help me remember You, to be grateful to You, and to worship
You in an excellent manner. (Abu Dawood and Nasai)
How can you excellently worship Allah? And how can you present a good deed before Allah? This can only be achieved if your action meets both conditions. Because if you do it any other way than the way of the Prophet, then that is an innovation, and innovation is evil.
Also, if there is no sincerity in your deed, then that is Shirk, and Shirk is also evil. For your action to be considered excellent, it must be done with Ikhlaas (Sincerity) and Mutab'ah (Following the way of the Prophet).
Fudail Ibn lyad said, commenting on Allah's statement
So that He may test you as to which of you is better in his deeds. (Quran 67:2)
