The sun lowered, though a meandering haze meant it
hadn't fully set. The hum of crickets, the distant final tweeting of black-bellied sandgrouse, and the slow trudging of a European turtle brought the day to its close. The Moriscos awaited the night. Some sat outside on uncreaking seats, gazing at the darkening sky; some peered through windows draped with darkened chiffon; others waited in their homes in quiet remembrance. The sun hung low over Del Paso's fields, and daffodils appeared as dark sticks, some still stooping. Gossamers that had provided a thin protection around fragile stalks blew slowly away in the warm breeze of another night.
A hoarse squawking of parent gulls shot through the evening sky, indicating that their nests were under threat. Silent, still, and alone stood the rapidly growing but short-lived poplars, wild olives, labdanum trees, and holm oaks. The latter trees puffed out, large and elegant with rounded crowns, enormous even from a distance.
A small streak cut through the water, carrying with it hake and whiting that had remained out of reach of fishermen that day. These survivors wriggled along, leaving tiny ripples behind, with some even brave enough to skim over the surface. The stone-arched Puente Cabrera Bridge spanned the Darro River in the Albaicín of Granada. Under the bridge, a young fisherman lit a small fire, its smoke curling steadily skyward.
Morning arose with the subtle citrusy coolness of Albaicín's fields of orange and lemon. Yellowed expanses like these were once workplaces and compositions, gem-encrusted soils of Abu al-Khayr and Ibn al-'Awwam-where men had laboured

It's happening now.
It has been said that time flies over us but leaves its shadows behind.
The adhan now calls out from the Great Mosque of Granada. It overlooks the valley of the River Darro, offering a vista of the Alhambra Palace standing on the lush green Hill of Sabika, with the peaks of the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop.
Its courtyard is a heavenly kaleidoscope of colour, adorned with plants native to the Mediterranean-pine, olive, pomegranate, orange, and lemon. The imam, a young native Spaniard, is dressed in a jubba overcoat. A convert to Islam, his story is etched into centuries-old fabric, woven and worn, lost and found, hidden and rediscovered. He draws his garment around himself as he utters words in Arabic.
As the adhan resonates through the air, birds glitter across the cloudless sky. A warm breeze wafts through the scented atmosphere. It is a moment of profound significance. Fresh water still drops from the worshippers but dries too soon in the midday heat. Downstairs, a lady waits to take her shahadah. Veiled, she clutches prayer beads as a bead of sweat trickles down her cheek.
Ah, who could have imagined... here again? Who could have imagined that the Morisco would find his mosque again? Who could have imagined the Morisca returning to her home once more?

A encapsulating tale based on real events in which a family of Muslims are pushed to their limits to survive. Secret codes and cryptic undertakings abound in the Fernandez household. These are Moriscos of Al-Andalus, secret Muslims who had to hide their faith during the Spanish inquisition.
Fernandez, his wife, Maria, and their children, Nicolas and Elvira, use their strength, intelligence, faith, and courage to navigate the treacherous lands of a world now forgotten. As the world around them looks bleak, they rely upon a hidden book-but will that spell more challenges for these underground Muslims?
A story of survival, trust, and adventure. Shadows of Strangers brings to life the experiences of Muslims in a world darkened by the Spanish Inquisition. They need to bond together and work out how best to survive in a most difficult environment.
