Earth to Eternity: The Journey of the Children of Adam
The Holy Qur'an draws us into a parable that transcends time: the story of life, springing from the earth and journeying toward its Creator into eternity. Our very existence is rooted in soil, the element of humility and potential. It is from this humble beginning that the stages of becoming human commence, a journey both physical and spiritual, shaped by Divine wisdom. Allah says, "Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his progeny from an extract of a liquid disdained." (Surah as-Sajdah 32:7-8)
Just as seeds are sown in the soil and transformed by the touch of water, so too is every physical human formed from the dust of the earth, infused with water, and brought forth stage by stage. This process mirrors the cycle of life described in the Qur'an, where the earth, once barren, is revived by rain and blossoms with life, only to wither and return to its origin: "And strike for them the parable of the life of this world: [It is] like water which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, then becomes dry stubble which the winds scatter..." (Surah al-Kahf 18:45).
