Content:
Finding a Suitable Spouse
The book discusses the different ways Muslim youth may seek marriage, including the involvement of parents, family members, and communities. It highlights the challenges that can arise when families look for spouses from different cultural or national backgrounds and encourages Muslims to approach the process with wisdom and balance.
The Challenges of Marriage in North America
Muslim families living in North America may face unique circumstances when seeking suitable marriage partners. The book addresses issues such as cultural differences, immigration backgrounds, and the growing number of young Muslims who may consider marriage outside the Muslim faith. These challenges are examined in light of Islamic teachings and principles.
How Parents Can Help
Parents have an important role in helping their children establish successful Muslim families. The authors encourage parents to maintain realistic expectations and avoid unnecessary restrictions when considering potential spouses.
Choosing a Spouse According to Islam
The book emphasizes that the Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ should remain the primary sources when evaluating potential spouses. Parents are encouraged not to focus excessively on wealth, profession, ethnicity, educational status, or social background when these considerations conflict with sound Islamic criteria.
Building Strong Muslim Families
With practical advice and an Islamic approach to marriage, Blissful Marriage aims to help young Muslims and their families overcome common obstacles and make thoughtful decisions that can contribute to loving, stable, and successful marriages.

BLISSFUL MARRIAGE
3- Some immigrants resort to contacting people in their country of origin to find a suitable match for their children. The different backgrounds of the bride-to-be and groom-to-be represent an added challenge to the newly formed family. Another disadvantage to this method is the expected imbalance it may create in the male/female ratio of youth at the age of marriage in North America
4- A third group of Muslim youth get married to non Muslims without paying much attention to Islamic marriage rules regarding marrying people of the book. This issue will be discussed in detail later in this chapter.
How Parents and Community Can Help
Parents in North America can do a great deal to help their children get married and form new Muslim families. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Be reasonable in their expectations. Some families have
unrealistic expectations from the bride or groom they are seeking for their young adult child. Some may refuse to marry their daughter to a person who may be still studying to finish his university degree. Others may request a very high dowry from the groom. A third group will only consider marrying their daughter to somebody who is financially well established. A fourth group will never consider the thought that their daughter or son could marry a Muslim from a different ethnic background. More narrow-minded parents, which are not rare in this continent, would only consider marrying their daughters to men of certain professions, such as medical doctors or engineers. These unrealistic expectations complicate the matter further, and make it hard for those young adults to get married. Parents should be reasonable in their expectations and should stick to the criteria given by the Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad SAAW as the main source for the selection process of the spouses they seek for their children.
