Description du livre

Introduction
This book is the outcome of several years' informal
debate. Muslim women are continually discussing amongst themselves the issues addressed in this book, but the final impetus to put pen to paper came from a lengthy phone conversation that covered a number of these issues. I put the phone down and immediately scribbled down a list of issues. I had just spoken with a close friend who told me of yet another instance of wife- battering in the Muslim community, this time in a family in another town; a family with whom I was not well-acquainted, but who I knew were held in high esteem; people who, typically, one would never imagine as a household wherein violence was commonplace.
From domestic violence, we had moved on to discuss other feminine woes, and it struck me that there are several issues that are 'favourites' of our opponents, who use them against us at every opportunity. Even worse, the behaviour of Muslims may all too often only serve to reinforce the stereotypes. With the intention of putting our own house in order, it is time we examined exactly what Islam says about these matters. Then we can correct ourselves, and also have the confidence that we are equipped with the information with which to dispel the stereotypes.
This is also, in part, a very personal book. As a woman of Western origin, a convert to Islam, I have had to wrestle with many of the 'women in Islam' issues; and to a certain extent I am still, after over two decades in Islam, struggling to come to terms with one or two of them. It is the practices of Muslims that cause

A Journey Through Women's Issues in Islam
The description of a woman as a 'bent rib' is not derogatory to women. It comes from the hadith of the Prophet (), who exhorted men not to try to change or 'straighten' women by force but to accept them as they are created by Allah, and to follow his example by interacting with women on a basis of respect and compassion.
Bent Rib: A Journey Through Women's Issues in Islam is the result of the author's exploration of a number of issues surrounding Muslim women, especially those which critics of Islam use as ammunition. These are matters of concern to all Muslim women. Bent Rib examines several controversial topics such as domestic violence, female genital mutilation, polygyny and the failure to educate women and girls, and points out the divergence between Islamic teaching and actual culturally-influenced practice. The problem is not Islam itself, but un-Islamic practices that are prevalent in many communities. This is a situation which has to be addressed honestly.
In this new and revised edition of Bent Rib, important information has been updated and new and interesting developments in these areas are discussed with regard to their impact on Muslim women and their society.
