and unqualified and (2) mixed with disobedience. The single type is also of two Regarding defiance, it shown to be of two kinds in the Book of Allah: (1) single types: (1) defiance that leads to disbelief and (2) defiance that does not take a man
out of Islam.
The mixed defiance is mentioned in the following statement of Allah
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them. "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny." (32:20)
All of this is the defiance of disbelief. The defiance which does not cause a man to go out of Islam is mentioned in the following äyät:
"If you do so, it is, indeed, defiance on your part." (2:282)
"But Allah has endeared faith to you and made it beautiful to your hearts; He has made disbelief, mischief, and disobedience hateful to you. It is people like this whe are rightly guided" (49:7)
The single defiance-which is disbelief-is cited in the following ayat:
"Through it He makes many go astray and leads many to the right path. But it is only the defiant He makes go astray-those who break their covenant with Allah after it has been confirmed, who sever the bonds that Allah has commanded to be joined, and who spread corruption on the earth." (2: 26-27)
"And We have certainly revealed to you verses (which are) clear proofs, and no one would deny them except the defiantly disobedient." (2:99)
"O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful" (49:6)
This ayah was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn 'Uqbah ibn Abu Mu'ayt, when the Messenger of Allah sent him to Banu al-Muştaliq to collect charity. There was animosity between him and the tribe. When the people heard of him coming, they came to receive him to show respect to the order of the Messenger of Allah. But Satan put it in his mind that they were coming to kill him. Feeling scared, he returned from the way to the Messenger of Allah and said that Banu al-Mustaliq tave refused to pay their dues of charity and that they wanted to kill him. The Mes- senger of Allah was enraged and intended to attack them.
When the tribe learned that the envoy of the Messenger had gone back, they went to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, we heard of your envoy coming to us and we came out to receive and honour him. We wanted to pay the dues of Allah on us. But the man went back. We feared that his action may have been a message of Allah from His anger and His Messenger's anger." from you, because you were angry with us for some reason. We seek the protection

Fundamentals of Repentance
SIGNIFICANCE OF REPENTANCE
The station of repentance is the first stage of the servant's journey, as well as the middle and the last. The traveller does not abandon it, but continues with it until the last moment of life. Even as he progresses to other stages, he carries repentance with him. Repentance is both the beginning and the end for the servant. He needs it as much at the end as he does at the beginning. Allah said:
Believers, all of you, turn to God so that you may prosper. (24:31)

This ayah belongs to the Madinan period, during which Allah people of faith-His best creation-urging them to turn to Him in repentance after they believed, showed patience, emigrated, and engaged in jihad. He linked prosperity with repentance, illustrating it as a cause-and-effect relationship. By using the word 'la'alla' ('may'), which indicates expectation, He emphasises that when you turn in repentance, you can hope for success. The hope of success belongs only to those who turn to Allah in repentance. May Allah make us among those who do! Allah also said:
Those who do not repent are evildoers. (49:11).
The Almighty divided the servants into two categories: the repentant and the evildoers. There is no third category, and He called the person who did not re- pent an evildoer. This is because such a person is the greatest evildoer, failing to acknowledge his Lord and His rights, and being unaware of his own faults and the bad consequences of his deeds.
It is reported in the authentic collection of hadith that the Messenger of Allah said, "People, turn to Allah in repentance. By Allah, I certainly turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times in a day." His Companions counted him saying
