2-1. What the Quran is all AboutThe Quran, a book which brings glad tidings to mankind along with divineadmonition, stresses the importance of man's discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes.Every book has its objective and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the Creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span, and what he is going to confront after death. The purpose of the Quran is to make man aware of this reality, thus serving to guide man on his entire journey through life into the after-life.The main themes of the Quran are enlightenment, closeness to God, peace and spirituality. The Quran uses several terms, tawassum, tadabbur, and tafakkur, which indicate the learning of lessons through reflection, thinking and contemplation on the signs of God scattered across the world.The2. The Revelation of the Quranhe Prophet Muhammad would often sit alone in the cave of Hira, near Makkah, to pray and think deeply, asking the Creator of the Heavens and earth for answers to the questions that surged through his mind. What is man's true role in life? What does the Lord require of us? From where does man come, and where will he go after death? All alone the Prophet would remain deep in thought, surrounded by nature, seeking answers to all these profound questions. On one of the nights of Ramadan, as usual, the Prophet was sitting all alone in the cave. Suddenly, the Archangel Gabriel (Jibril) appeared before him in human form and taught him the very first verses of the Quran. The Prophet felt that the verses had actually been written on his heart. In this manner the Quran began to be revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad & through the angel. It took 23 long years to complete all the verses of the Holy Book. Being the true word of Allah in human language, the Quran is a book of learning for all mankind which will last forever.
In the name of Allah, the most gracious the most merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Universe; the Beneficent, the Merciful; Lord of the Day of Judgement. You alone we worship, and to You alone we turn for help. Guide us to the straight path: the path of those You have blessed; not of those who have earned Your anger, nor of those who have gone away from the right path. Al-Fatihah 1:1-7The month of Ramadan, therefore, is a yearly reminder of this blessing which has no equal. The celebration of the revelation of the Quran is not observed in the usual way, but is marked by not eating and drinking, and by showing gratitude to the Almighty, by various forms of charity. Fasting in this month is like saying 'Thank You' for the divine blessing.3. Arrangement of the QuranDuring the time of the Prophet Muhammad & whenever a part of the Quran(whether an ayah or a surah) was revealed, it was immediately noted down in writing by some scribe. The entire Quran was revealed in 23 years. After the complete revelation of the Quran, during the lifetime of the Prophet, once the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet and put all the revealed ayahs and surahs in a certain order in which we read it till now. The arrangement was not in the chronological order of the revelation dates, thus we find the first revelation "Read, in the name of your Lord..." in chapter 96. (Al-Alaq 96:1)The first chapter or surah of the Quran is known as al-Fatihah, meaning the 'Opening.' It contains seven beautiful verses beginning with praise of the Almighty Allah and a prayer for guidance to the right path at the end. These seven verses are also known as al-Sab' al- Mathani, or "the most oft repeated verses" as they are repeated several times in the daily prayers.
AIf God should let any harm touch you, no one could remove it except He; while if He should let some good touch you, know that He has the power to do all that He wills. He reigns Supreme over His servants; and He is the All Wise, the All Aware. Al-An'am 6:17-18Musa replied: "If Allah will, you shall find me patient: I shall in no way cross you." Al-Khidr agreed but warned Musa not to question him about anything until he mentioned it himself.The172. The Prophet Musa Travels with Al-KhidrThe two then embarked upon a ship, whereupon al-Khidr bored a hole in it. Musa exclaimed: "Do you want to drown the passengers?""Didn't I tell you," replied al-Khidr, "that you would not bear with me?""Forgive me," said Musa. "Please don't be angry." Theyjourneyed on until they met a young boy, whom al-Khidr promptly killed. Musa exclaimed: "What wickedness-killing an innocent soul!"126
5-"Didn't I tell you," al-Khidr replied, "that you would not bear with me?" Musa said: "If ever I question you again, abandon me; for then I should deserve it."Then they came to a city and asked for food, but were refused. Seeing a wall that was crumbling, al-Khidr repaired it, but Musa objected to his doing so without payment.173. Al-Khidr Explains his Actionsow we must part," said al-Khidr. "But first I will explain my actions which"N seemed so dreadful to you. I damaged the ship because it belonged tosome poor fishermen and nearby there was a king who plundered every vessel. As for the youth, he would only have distressed his believing parents with his wickedness and unbelief. We prayed that their Lord would replace him with a more righteous and filial son. The wall belonged to two orphans, sons of an honest man in the city. Beneath it their treasure lay buried. Your Lord decreed that they should dig it up when they grew to manhood. What I did was not by my will. That explains what you could not bear to watch with patience." (18:60-82)
