THE BARAKAH EFFECT: MORE WITH LESS
The Prophet Muhammad & described believers as one body. If we are not able to be one body with our own families, how will we be one body as a community or ummah at large?
3. Personalised Consumerism
Additionally, modern consumerism drives the ego-centred life Everything can be personalised to the nth degree to fit our exact desire and serve our egos in highly specialised ways. From the type of food we eat, to the brand of coffee we drink, everything can be customised to our egos. Even gadgets that should be standard tools can be customised with personal- ised engravings of our names on the device. This explosion of personalisation and customisation of products and services to our individual needs keeps feeding the ego-centred lifestyle. We need to take off the expensive, pompous clothes of individualism and wear the clothes of servitude to Allah if we want Barakah in our lives.
HOW SHAYTAN EXPLOITS OUR INSTINCTS From the very beginning of human existence, the choice between living an ego-centred life or a God-centred life has been present. When Allah created Adam, he was intended to live a life of worship and to be God's vicege- rent on earth. However, shaytan exploited Adam's nots, or inner desires, and led him to make the mistake of eat- ing from the forbidden tree.
When Adam was in Jannah, shaytan promised him
two things:
1. Immortality
2. Power and Kingdom that never ends.
But Satan whispered to Adam, saying, 'Adam, shall I show you the tree of immortality and power that never decays?' (QURAN 20:120)
If you think about this, these are the two things every hu- man being desires: to live as long as possible, and to own as many items or have power as much as possible. These two desires are what Hustle Culture exploits to convince us to worship ourselves (or work) instead of Allah. Interestingly, even though Adam was already in Jannah, which should have fulfilled his desires for immortality and ownership, shaytan exploited his human weakness and made him turn away from the Barakah in Jannah. In our own lives, we may also have everything we need for a life of Barakah, yet still feel like something is missing. Shay- ton takes advantage of this feeling to make us desire things that are not permissible and lead us astray from the path of Allah.
Of course, the story doesn't end there. Although shaytan did convince Adam to disobey Allah, Adam and Hawa (Eve), realising their mistake, sought God's forgiveness and they were forgiven - a reminder that just because you turn towards Hustle Culture and an ego-centred life. it never means the door to Barakah is shut in your face.
