تسمية السورة:
۱ - اسمها: «سورة الشمس»، أو «سورة وَالشَّمس »، كما في معظم كتب
التفسير والحديث (۱).
٢ - وسماها البخاري في صحيحه» ، والترمذي في «جامعه»: «سورة وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَها (۲)، بالآية الأولى منها، وهكذا هي في بعض كتب التفسير، وهذا جيد للتفريق بينها وبين السور الأخرى في جزء (عم) المبدوءة بالشمس، مثل قوله : إذا الشَّمْسُ كُورَتْ ونحوها . عدد آياتها : (١٥) آية، أو (١٦) بحسب اختلاف المصاحف (۳).

آيات "جزء عم على وجازة ألفاظها وقصرها، بديعة المعاني، رائقة الألفاظ، حاوية من دقائق الإعجاز ما يبهر العقول، ويأخذ بالألباب.
وإنني لأشعر بانشراح وأنس عند الوقوف على هذه الآيات وتدبر معانيها وتكرار النظر فيها، وأجد لذلك لذة ليست لغيرها.
إن عامة سور هذا الجزء هي أول ما خوطبت به البشرية من كتاب الله عز وجل، وقضايا هذه السور هي قضايا الوجود الإنساني كله، كما أن سور هذا الجزء القصيرة هي ما يحفظه أغلب المسلمين
