The Prophet's Environment and
I still remember an image in a documentary film produced by Princeton University, that I saw twenty years ago. In an amazing sequence, the Middle East appeared as the center of the earth. I was amazed again while following the flight course on a small screen in a plane bound for China. The Arabian peninsula appeared in the same powerful image, at the center of five continents, a core from which Islam could spread out to the surrounding world.
In the Pre-Islamic era, however, Arabia except for Yemen, was impenetrable to foreign occupation due to its tough deserts. Despite the presence of two powerful empires, the Persian to the east and the Byzantine to the north and west, the Arabs throughout antiquity remained free from foreign control. Thanks to the deserts the Arabs enjoyed liberty, which provided them with a unique sense of pride and independence; yet they were not cut off from the outside world. The Arabs traveled for trade: north to Syria in winter, and south in the summer to Abyssinia.
Arabia is divided into three geographic regions: Hijaz, a dry area parallel to the Red Sea where are located the two major cities of Islam, Mecca and Madina. Najd, a mountainous region. Al-Rubu al-Hali, a desert.

Birth of a Prophet
Prophet Mohammed was born in the Year of the Elephant (around 570 A.D.) His grandfather called him Mohammed, or The Praised, a name unknown to Arabs at the time. The name came to his pregnant mother in a vision, along with the announcement of the birth of "the Master of this nation."
The Prophet's grandfather Abdulmuttalib sent him to be nursed in the countryside. It was a common practice for Meccan notables to entrust their infants to wet nurses living in the country. This was thought to protect them from city diseases, and to expose them to the pure Arabic language of the Bedouins. The Prophet's wet nurse Halima, from the Banu Sa'd tribe, related many signs that led her to think that the child was exceptional.
When the Prophet was four a very peculiar event occurred: While Mohammed was playing with the Banu Sa'd children, his foster brother went to his parents in fright. He told them that, "two white-clad men grasped Mohammed and laid him on the ground. Then they opened up his chest and plunged in their hands." The couple ran to the scene and found Mohammed shaking and pale.
Later the Prophet said that the two men split open his chest, took out his heart, and removed a black clot that they threw away. Then they washed his heart and

LEILA ABOUZEID is a Pioneer among Moroccan women writers, She studied at Mohammed V University in Rabat and at the University of Texas at Austin. She began her career as a radio and TV journalist and also worked as a press assistant in government ministries and in the prime minister's office. In 1992 she left journalism to dedicate herself to writing. Abouzeid's fiction has been translated from Arabic into English, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Maltese, French, and Urdu. Her autobiography Return to Childhood Figures on the syllabus of Moroccan schools.
Why write a new biography of the Prophet Mohammed? Several biographies about the Prophet Mohammed already exist. The idea came to me in 2005 after the publication of the Danish cartoons of the prophet, as a response to much of the ignorance and prejudice expressed in islamophobia.
This biography of the Prophet Mohammed is the first by a Muslim woman and by a novelist. It is written in English with minimal interpretation and commentary. I want readers of the book, both English-speaking Muslims and non-Muslims seeking a better understanding of Islam, to do their own reading.
