PROLOGUE
The death of Abu Talib left the Prophet without a pro- tecting ally, and the death of Khadijah without personal moral support, in a Makka that refused his call to Islam. His attempt to find a new base in Taif had been frustrated. Yemen and Abyssinia were too far away and were not, for other reasons besides, suitable places in which to establish a Muslim com- munity under the Prophet's leadership. He was, it is true, offered the guarantee of Mut'im ibn 'Uday which was tem- porarily sufficient; but it did not, in a hostile Makka, afford security either for the Prophet's own person or for the Muslims such as they had enjoyed from Abu Talib. The polytheists of Makka were not slow to realise the significance of Abu Tälib's death and intensified their persecution. Darkness threatened to extinguish the new faith, and the chances of survival for the nascent Muslim community seemed slim indeed. Now, when all other avenues were closed, hope came from the direction of Yathrib. It was to this ancient Arabian oasis in the North that, after his return from Taif, the Prophet's thoughts turned. Here, in contrast to Makka, the birth of Islam and the events it had provoked had caused a favourable stir. The interest in Islam grew in Yathrib and very quickly assumed the proportions of a movement which culmi- nated in the conclusion of the two 'Aqaba pledges. The second 'Aqaba pledge promised not only a refuge but, more significantly,' political alliance and military defence of the Islamic cause.
