An Islamic Perspective on Wealth and Livelihood

The book explains that wealth itself is not condemned in Islam; rather, what matters is how wealth is earned, managed, and used. The author highlights the importance of lawful earnings, moderation, gratitude, and financial discipline while warning against greed, extravagance, and attachment to worldly possessions.

The work reminds readers that true success lies not in material abundance alone, but in contentment, sincerity, and using wealth in obedience to Allah.

Topics Covered in the Book

The book contains valuable chapters discussing many aspects of wealth and financial ethics, including:

  • Lawful earning and taking wealth rightfully
  • The virtues and benefits of wealth
  • Wealth management and moderation
  • Pursuing professions and craftsmanship
  • Honest trade and business dealings
  • Real estate and cultivation
  • Moderation in food and clothing
  • Inheritance and financial responsibility

The author also includes narrations from the Companions and early scholars demonstrating balance, simplicity, and wisdom in financial matters.

Lessons from the Early Scholars

Throughout the book, readers encounter beneficial sayings and examples from great figures of Islamic history, including:

  • Umar ibn al-Khattab
  • Salman al-Farisi
  • Malik ibn Dinar
  • Talhah ibn Ubaydillah

These narrations illustrate how the righteous predecessors balanced worldly resources with spirituality, humility, and devotion to Allah.

Wealth as a Means, Not a Goal

One of the central themes of the book is that wealth should remain a servant of faith rather than becoming its master. The author emphasizes:

  • Contentment over greed
  • Simplicity over extravagance
  • Honest work over unlawful gain
  • Gratitude for Allah’s provisions
  • Using wealth to benefit oneself and others

The famous prophetic statement included in the book beautifully summarizes this principle:

“How excellent is righteous wealth for a righteous person.”

A CLASSICAL WORK ON
WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Blurb of Işlah Al-Mal
Işlah Al-Mal (Wealth Management) by Al-Hafiz Ibn Abi Ad- Dunya (d. 281 AH) - may Allah have mercy upon him - is a timeless masterpiece that gathers the wisdom of the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the sayings of the early righteous scholars on the proper understanding, acquisition, and use of wealth. In an age where material abundance often clouds spiritual clarity, this work reminds the believer that wealth is not condemned in itself, but rather, its misuse and attachment to it are what corrupt the heart. Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya meticulously organizes narrations that teach moderation in spending, lawful earning, gratitude for sustenance, and the virtue of self-sufficiency. He highlights the dangers of greed, extravagance, and unlawful gain, while emphasizing the excellence of earning through one's own hands and spending in obedience to Allah.
Işlah Al-Mäl thus serves as both a guide for financial discipline and a spiritual manual for purifying one's dealings with wealth before Allah. It calls the Muslim to recognize that true prosperity lies not in abundance, but in contentment, integrity, and using one's possessions as a means to seek the pleasure of Allah, ensuring that wealth remains a servant of faith, not its master.
