The Water Clock
Hasan had always been fascinated by finding new ways to tell the time without relying on the sun or stars.
NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR THE WATER CLOCK
He began researching the Greek, Chinese, and Indian inventions of the water clock. It was based on the principle of gravity, which allowed water to flow through a small hole in a container at a steady rate. By measuring the amount of water that flowed, people were able to keep track of time.
Hasan wanted to create something more spectacular and different from the existing water clocks of the time. He spent much of his spare time working on his idea. After many failed attempts, he succeeded in designing one that measured time with water perfectly. He took the water clock to show his peers at the House of Wisdom. Everyone was amazed and admired his creativity and innovation.
VISIT FROM AL-FADL
One day, Hasan received a surprise visit from Al-Fadl ibn al-Rabi, the Chief Minister. He was the Caliph's most trusted man and advisor. Al-Fadl told Hasan that he had heard about his invention of the water clock. Caliph Harun al-Rashid was looking for an extraordinary invention to present as a gift to Emperor Charlemagne.
Charlemagne was the Holy Roman Emperor and the most powerful man in Western Europe. Caliph Harun al-Rashid was eager to establish a friendship with Charlemagne. Despite their differences, they held great respect for one another. Exchanging gifts between rulers was a common practice to strengthen diplomatic ties. The Emperor of China, the Emperor of Ethiopia, and the King of Armenia were among the other rulers who had received gifts from Harun al-Rashid.
The Caliph wanted to give Charlemagne a gift that would demonstrate to him and the rest of Europe the sophistication of his kingdom in terms of technology and innovation.
"Emperor Charlemagne and the people of Europe. have no idea about our great love for science, medicine, and the arts. Our Caliph wants to surprise them with a gift unlike anything they have ever seen," Al-Fadl explained.

the correct time
for daily prayers.
