Authentic Tafsir
What is Tafsir?
The term tafsir is derived from fassara which means 'to clarify', 'to uncover', 'to show', 'to explain in detail'.' It is also said that tafsir stems from asfara meaning 'to uncover', 'to show'. The Arabs say:
أسفرت الشمس
This refers to the sun gradually being uncovered as it rises. A journey is also called safar because it uncovers the character of a person. (FAIRUZĀBĀDI 1995:1/78-79). Therefore, fassara means 'to explain' and safar of which the verbal form is asfara means 'to shine' or 'to uncover'.2
In Islamic terms, tafsir refers to uncovering the meaning of the Qur'an. As Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah () said, "Tafsir is to have encompassing knowledge [of the Qur'an]" The word tafsir is also found in the following verse:
وَلا يَأْتُونَكَ بِمَثَلٍ إِلَّا جِئْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَأَحْسَنَ تَفْسِيرًا
"And they do not come to you with an argument except that We bring you the truth and the best explanation."4
This shows that tafsir refers to that which is explained and when used for the Qur'an it means its explanation. The use of tafsir helps elucidate the meaning of the Qur'an and derive legal rulings. Primarily, it is concerned with the authentic narrations free from deviation and errors.

Authentic Tafsir
The sources of tafsir are used as a platform to define what a particular verse means. Tafsir is built upon a foundation, that being, the sources from which it is derived (See appendix 1). This section shows how verses are understood using these sources and many examples will be given.
The 1st source - The Explanation of the Qur'an by the Qur'an The eighth-century scholar Imam al-Shatbi (d.AH790) mentions that the best way to explain the Qur'an is by the Qur'an itself. Thereafter, the Qur'an is explained by the authentic Prophetic traditions and then by the explanation of the Companions of the Prophet). Finally, the Qur'an is explained by the Successors and then by the Arabic language (AL-SHATBI 1994:3/369) The tafsir of the Qur'an is first derived from the Qur'an itself where the meaning is portrayed in the context of other verses. That is, Allah would reveal and clarify general verses. For example, the verse in Yunus (Verse 62):
أَلا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
"No doubt! Verily, the Awliya' of Allah (i.e. those who believe in the Oneness of Allah and fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden), and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)), no fear shall co me upon them nor shall they grieve." The term Awliya' is explained in the next verse, Yunus:63
الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ
"Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah
Monotheism), and used to fear Allah much (by abstaining from
evil deeds and sins and by doing righteous deeds)."
