Let me say, with full conviction, that there is no chance for us, nor for any nation, to occupy a respectable place among the advanced nations without raising our cultural awareness - we are living in the age of knowledge, and we cannot do without information and books. Therefore, raising children who really are fond of reading is our first and foremost challenge - and it will take all our commitment to succeed there. Having this in mind I proposed to tackle this issue in a book; and, as in the previous volumes in the series, I try to come upon solutions for the difficult dilemma - giving special attention to being true to the requirements of accuracy and reliability; maintaining, at the same time, an accessible and smooth reading: in which I hope to bring these concepts within the comprehension of as wide a readership as possible.

A CHILD READS
hrist once said, "Man shall not live on bread alone. - (The Bible. Mat 4:4) And this is most true, for it has been Allah's will that
a human is naturally in need of many things; food and drink are no more than two of the many things we need to keep on rising and progressing, human beings will inevitably need to actively fulfill their intellectual and spiritual needs. It is true that people notice their physical needs much more than their intellectual and spiritual needs, but this does not make the latter less vital. The physical needs must of course be satisfied for the physical survival; but by satisfying the intellectual and spiritual needs we come to know our Lord, we learn about the reality of Islam, we know the world for what it is, we are happier people - and we are enabled to ascend on the way of progress. All these are not rated as necessities for humankind, but we are not real humans without them. But let me now touch on some incentives to children's reading:
1. The first six years of the child's life are critical in defining his/her desires, attitudes and inclinations. That is why it is most vital to endear reading to the child. Some families seem to suppose that to like or dislike reading is inborn; and so, they do not feel called upon to put in any real effort to stimulate their children to read. Some, on the other hand, feel sure that they can make the child like reading at any time they wish, and they consequently neglect it until the child has really entered adolescence, without his/her having acquired this attachment to reading, by which time it is too late to make him/her acquire it.
There is an abundance of incidents and proofs which indicate that failing to instill the habit of reading at a tender age, will result in difficulty to do so after the optimal age.
Let's think of certain vegetables which are to be planted only at the beginning of winter, and other vegetables which have to be planted only in spring - in the same way, directing the children to the best use of their potentials, and instilling the best attitudes is not time-free. There is an optimal time that should not be bypassed. Here is a father who did not take note of the necessity of training his son to read until he was eleven;

SOME VITAL ESSENTIALS
of course do have enormous resources and abilities - but then those resources and abilities are not infinite. Every one
of us will have to determine his priorities, to which he/she is willing to direct his interest and effort. And this is the pivotal point concerning the issue of reading: To establish the habit of reading in the children requires time, effort, and patience. The parents must work hard for it, and must not give up- and of course they will not have this impulse to put in so much effort without being quite conscious of the value of their quest. The observer will notice how many a family has failed in this quest. It is that they have not allotted enough time for digesting some substantial material on how to make reading attractive to their children; and that many families bear a lot of delusions and misconceptions in this respect. It is for ridding families of such delusions and misconceptions that this book is written.
Let me now put forth some concepts and rules that we need in the course of developing a new awareness:
1. Target: Establishing the habit of reading
Those who realise the positive results that reading can bring to a child's life will not hesitate to keep urging them to read; nothing will detain them from developing this habit. People do in a general way perceive that reading and knowledge are valuable for a good life - you may not come across one parent who has not at one time or another urged his/her child to read and spend a fruitful time with a book. But then, there is abundant evidence that most parents do not really bring their children to read, in any substantial way.
So what parents should set as one of their most important priorities as educators, systematically and constantly, is to endear reading to their children.
Let us remember that a child does not fully comprehend what is required of him/her as soon as we wish it
