Mujahidaat (Women Warriors) in Islam
The root word of Jihad is Juhd, which means the extruding of effort. Therefore Jihad is the extruding of effort against an enemy
of Allah for the sake of Allah
وتعالى سخانه
This enemy could be Satan, a person's inner destructive self, the hypocrites or the violent disbelievers. In Islamic history Jihad is usually the word used when referring to fighting against oppressors, tyrants, and enemies of the religion and state for the sake of Allah by all means possible.
The main purpose of Jihad is the removal of falsehood and establishment of truth. Allah says in the Quran:
As for the constant believers, they are those who believe in God and His Messenger, and who do not have any doubt about their faith, and who strive with their wealth and their persons in the path of God. It is these who are the truehearted.
(49:15)
The word "strive" in the above verse is the Quranic translation of the Arabic word Jihad. Thus Allah emphasizes that Jihad, or striving, in the path of God is a sign of true faith. Allah also says:
O you who believe! Shall I direct you to a transaction that shall deliver you from a most painful torment? It is that you believe in God and His Messenger and strive in the path of God with your wealth and your persons. That is best for you, if only you were to know God's reward for it.
Mujahidaat (Women Warriors) in Islam
He shall forgive you your sins, and admit you into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, and give you residence in good and pleasant dwellings in the Garden everlasting. That is
the magnificent triumph. (61:10-12)
In these verses Allah confirms the great reward those who strive in the path of God will receive in the afterlife and Allah's promises are
always fulfilled.
Since this book revolves around women, this chapter deals with the Jihad, or struggle, of women for the sake of Allah. Due to the many domains of a woman's life, her Jihad also enters many domains. She strives internally within herself, as well as in her home, among her family, in her education, in society and in battle.
There is no doubt that apart from the battlefield, women struggle daily in almost every aspect of their lives. Certainly it is a strong and true hearted woman indeed who puts the pleasure of her Lord as her ultimate goal amidst the pressures of her struggles.
The Domains of Jihad
Jihad of the Self
Struggles within one's self are often the most difficult, for what happens within is reflected through external actions and decisions. One must focus on overcoming his or her inner struggles before attempting to tackle everything else.
A Muslim woman who is dedicated to pleasing Allah must make this struggle of her inner self a priority. The natural fluctuation of the human condition makes it difficult for one to remain consistent at the same level of spiritual height, but it is our duty to keep trying. The struggle of the inner self is the most difficult of all struggle
